About Spencer Miles, the Author
My name is Spencer Miles, and I am fly fisherman and fish conservationist in Portland.
I was born and raised in Oregon, but a background in software engineering led me to San Francisco for a few years, which is where I first picked up a fly rod. In September of 2009 I came up to go fishing for Steelhead with my dad on the Deschutes, and three fish later, I was ruined. Two months later I was living in Portland, and my passion and obsession for the PNW’s anadromous fish has grown with day spent on the water.
Spending four years in California gave me a depressing but important glimpse into what can happen to runs of anadromous fish when lax environmental policies run wild. Seeing just how badly California’s rivers have been messed up, and not wanting Oregon to face the same fate has made me much more conservation-minded than I once was. If Oregon is going to have strong runs of native fish in the future, it is imperative that we stand up for the best interests of these fish. You will find me doing this on Whitefish Can’t Jump.
I am also one of the Native Fish Society River Stewards for the Nestucca River and Tillamook Bay Rivers.
